An Generosity of Unknown Individuals: How a Gentleman I Had Just Met Assisted Me Obtain the Position That Changed My Life

During the late 1980s, I was embarking on a low-cost journey to Europe with a travel partner. Since my companion was considering enrolling in graduate studies in NYC, we had planned a fortnight visit there on the way to London.

We reached the student accommodation, a large multi-story edifice on the Upper West Side named International House. Once we unpacked, we headed straight to the canteen, where we got some food, found a table, and started talking to fellow residents.

Beside me was an individual of Iraqi origin pursuing an engineering degree at Columbia University. He inquired what I did, and I shared that I had newly finished with a scientific background and had been working on studies with electron microscopy.

He noted that there was an electron microscope unit at Columbia University – right next door to the engineering faculty, which was why he was aware of it. He recommended that I consider applying for a position with them. I dismissed the idea, explaining that I was heading off to Europe and, additionally, I didn’t have a US visa.

The next day I ventured out, returning to the canteen that night. The Iraqi student walked over to me and informed me that he had arranged an interview for me with the head of the electron microscope unit at Columbia. Given that he had made the arrangement, I showed up for the discussion – but straight off informed my prospective employer that I was without a work permit, so I was likely not a suitable candidate.

As is common in NYC – a metropolis where opportunities abound – she declared: “We'll handle it. What's your start date?” I didn't board the aircraft to London.

I held that position for 36 months. An advantage of the role was that I also received complimentary education at Columbia, and I seized the chance to finish a postgrad program in international relations.

I lost touch with him and I can't recall his identity, but his remarkable generosity changed my life in so many ways. I didn't possess the confidence or nerve to contact anyone at an elite institution and ask for a job. Additionally, I had consistently hoped to pursue education overseas, but wouldn't have been able to pay for it without that free tuition.

Critically, that job in New York paved the way for a role in Europe where I encountered my wonderful partner, with whom I am raising four amazing children. It was a total sliding doors moment. That helpful person redirected my path in life, and I’m forever grateful.
