Ben & Jerry's Co-Founder Claims Parent Company Blocked Palestine-Themed Frozen Dessert Product
One of the original creators behind the well-known ice cream brand Ben & Jerry's has announced that corporate owner the multinational conglomerate stopped the introduction for an innovative Palestine-themed frozen dessert product.
The entrepreneur, that established the company with Jerry Greenfield, revealed that he plans to personally create the controversial product within a personal collection showcasing issues Ben & Jerry's was prevented from addressing publicly.
Longstanding Dispute Involving Founders versus Parent Company
This latest announcement escalates the continuing tension between the world-famous ice cream maker with its corporate parent, the UK-based packaged goods corporation that has owned the ice cream brand for over two decades.
Both founders maintain that the parent company along with their ice cream division the Magnum brand unlawfully blocked Ben & Jerry's from "maintaining its activist principles".
Watermelon Sorbet as an Emblem for Support
Mr. Cohen announced through an Instagram video that he's developing a new watermelon-flavored frozen dessert, requesting consumer ideas for the product's name and potential ingredients.
“I'm doing what they couldn't,” Mr. Cohen commented in his kitchen. “I'm creating a watermelon-flavored ice cream that calls for lasting ceasefire in Palestine while demanding repairing the damage that was done there.”
This particular fruit has emerged as a symbol of support for Palestinians because of its colors, which match those of the Palestinian flag – the distinctive four-color pattern.
Historical Social Engagement and Current Changes
Several years ago, the ice cream company refused to sell its products in territories under Israeli control, leading to Unilever transferring the Israeli operation to a local licensee, thereby permitting continued sales within disputed territories.
The new product line will be created through Mr. Cohen's personal brand, the activist dessert company that was first established in 2016 for endorsing former political contender Bernie Sanders via the product "Bernie's Return".
Leadership Shifts plus Upcoming Plans
The founder indicated that he will develop additional frozen dessert varieties that address issues which the company was silenced from addressing publicly due to corporate restrictions.
The announcement follows co-founder Jerry Greenfield stepped down from Ben & Jerry's recently, after decades with the organization, citing concerns regarding how the company's autonomy had been undermined following Unilever's decision to restrict its social activism.
At that time, Mr. Cohen stated how “My partner has strong compassion and this conflict with our parent company was breaking it."
“My conscience leads me to continue to work inside the company to advocate for its independence so that it can achieve the social mission, the principles which established its foundation while upholding for decades," he told media outlets.
