British Designer Antony Price, Celebrated for Styling David Bowie and Duran Duran, Passes Away at Age 80.
Antony Price, the groundbreaking British fashion designer behind some of the most iconic looks favored by David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Queen Camilla, has died aged 80.
He was celebrated for his defined forms and theatrical styles, including the pastel suits that appeared in the pop-rock group Duran Duran's seminal music video for "the song Rio".
"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement online."
Price's death comes shortly after he debuted his most recent collection in London, his first in more than 30 years. Artist Lily Allen showcased a dress evoking the famous black velvet "dress" historically worn by the late Princess Diana.
A Pioneering Career
Hailing from Yorkshire, where he was born in 1945, Price headed for London at the start of the 1960s to study at the renowned Royal College of Art.
Shortly after his graduation, he began designing clothing for men at the company Stirling Copper and was the creator of the form-fitting, button-fly pants that Sir Mick Jagger sported during the band's "Gimme Shelter" tour in the late sixties.
He established his eponymous line in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show opened with looks from the famed model Jerry Hall, who also wore the bridal gown Price designed for her for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.
Partnerships with Stars
A frequent collaborator of the late David Bowie, Price designed the memorable jacket the star wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His characteristic talent to merge elements of men's and women's fashion along with his expert craftsmanship in shaping body-hugging looks made him a "true original," in the words of the British Fashion Council.
By the 1990s, he began working on ensembles for Camilla, now Queen Consort, such as several ensembles for her US tour after becoming Duchess.
After a career spanning over fifty years, Price staged what would be his last show in London last month in partnership with the label 16Arlington.

- Gender-Fluid Fashion: Creating a unique, androgynous style.

The fashion world mourns the loss to a true visionary whose legacy on the visual landscape of music remains profoundly felt.
