Crew Member Shares Depression Following ‘Tsunami of Harassment After Historic Trip
A Vietnamese-American astronaut has spoken candidly about her battle with depression after facing a relentless barrage of criticism in the aftermath of a pioneering women-only spaceflight.
The 34-year-old activist – recognized as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the short-duration mission earlier this year, which also featured celebrity crewmates.
The much-publicized journey was heavily criticized by some, who cited its expense and ecological impact.
Reflecting on the experience, Ms. Nguyen, who became the pioneer for her community, stated the negative reaction buried her dreams under an landslide of gendered hatred.
“I explained the depression could persist for a long time,” Ms. Nguyen stated in a public message, recalling a check-in call from a fellow crew member in the days following the journey.
She characterized the subsequent media coverage and social media frenzy as an barrage beyond typical human coping.
“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she confessed. “A month later… I had to hang up… because I could not speak through my tears.”
Eclipsed by Backlash
The researcher, who has dedicated her work to female health science and operated research during the flight, said everything she had worked for – from her lab work and years of training to the personal milestone of her background – was buried under the tide of misogyny.
She is best known for her tireless campaigning championing the cause of victims of sexual violence.
Her own goal of reaching space was paused after being assaulted during her time as a student, leading to a years-long quest for justice.
The Fog Begins to Lift
Now, eight months after reaching space, she reports that the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she expressed gratitude the supporters whose messages of encouragement were her lifeline. “You were my salvation,” she affirmed.
She added that despite the negativity, significant positive outcomes had come out of the flight, such as spotlight on her scientific work and new advocacy opportunities.
The Historic Journey
The fully automated spacecraft departed its launch site in April, carrying the all-female team on a 11-minute journey that exceeded the edge of outer space.
The team of pioneers also comprised experts in multiple disciplines.
The company behind the flight is a commercial aerospace company launched by a well-known tech mogul.
