Israelis have gathered across the country to commemorate two years since the Hamas-initiated assault on October 7th, 2023, as negotiations advanced in the neighboring country over a conclusion to the war in Gaza.

The attack saw in excess of 1,200 people dead and 251 others taken back to Gaza as prisoners. It was the single most lethal day for Jews since the Second World War.

Israel answered by initiating a military offensive in Gaza which has taken more than 67,000 people, based on figures from the area's Hamas-controlled health ministry. Its statistics are considered trustworthy by the UN and other world agencies.

"Our aggressive opponents have hit us hard, but they have not broken us," Benjamin Netanyahu remarked on that day.

He also pledged to "achieve all the goals of the war: the return of all the abducted, the elimination of the Hamas government and the promise that Gaza will never again present a risk to Israel".

Remembrance Gatherings Across Israel

The government authorities delayed formal remembrance events until mid-October - after the end of the Jewish High Holiday season - but gatherings still were held across the country on Tuesday.

A memorial ceremony for the loved ones of Israelis who lost their lives in the Hamas incident was conducted in Tel Aviv. Arranged by the victims' relatives, it was televised throughout Israeli TV networks.

Some time earlier, a moment of silence was observed around the country.

Ceasefire Meetings in Egypt

At the same time, the conflicting parties' negotiating teams gathered in the Egyptian tourist destination of Sharm el-Sheikh for a second day of indirect talks to review the terms of the proposal.

A high-ranking delegate knowledgeable about the talks said that an evening round of indirect talks began at evening in Egypt.

The representative said the day's discussions finished without significant progress, because of conflicting views over the suggested Israeli pullout plans from Gaza and over guarantees Hamas wants to guarantee Israel does not restart hostilities after the initial stage of the agreement.

He commented that the talks are "difficult and have not yet produce any major advancement," but pointed out that facilitators are making efforts to close the disparities between the both parties.

Critical Matters in Talks

  • A permanent truce
  • The exchange of the hostages still kept by Hamas for inmates from Gaza
  • The withdrawal of military personnel from Gaza
  • Measures for relief supplies distribution
  • Post-war governance of the territory

Civilian Feeling

In Tel Aviv's Hostages Square that day, 29-year-old Hagar - whose sibling lived through the assault on the Nova music festival, where many attendees were lost their lives and dozens more were captured by Hamas militants - told: "Nowhere appears as home anymore and until every captive are released not a single person will have peace of mind."

"When we see all home once more, we can relax once more. Then we can start to recover," she continued.

In front of the leader's home in the capital, people gathered to demonstrate their solidarity for the relatives of the captives. Israel reports nearly fifty stay in confinement in Gaza, 20 of whom are believed to be alive.

Protester Atalia Regev explained: "It's necessary do any agreement necessary for the captives to come back home. But we truly desire assurances that we will be protected."

Surveys now frequently demonstrate that approximately 70% of Israelis want the conflict to finish in exchange for the liberation of the captives.

Gaza Situation

At the area of the gathering, mourners came together to honor the dead.

From there, the boom of military attacks and shelling could be heard just a brief space away in Gaza, where local people said the intense Israeli attacks carried on.

In the urban center, air and artillery strikes were documented in the dawn of Tuesday in the west side neighborhood, Rimal and zone neighbourhoods and in the eastern area of the community, as well the settlement to the northwestern area.

"Once the dusk falls, the fear arrives with it," evacuated urban resident a mother, whose 17-year-old son was killed by an Israeli aerial attack last year, described.

"My family are fearful of the attacks. Throughout the evening we are lying together, embracing, particularly my little child who places his face on me all night."

"Continuously we check the reports to see what happened. And I'm worried that this halt will not be finalized and that the war will return to us."

Health Emergency

Al-Shifa hospital in the urban area announced it had accepted the corpses of half dozen people by the daytime, including a trio who lost their lives in an Israeli attack in the southern district.

A different healthcare center in the south region of the city said another two fatalities had been delivered. A person was lost his life by Israeli forces while attempting to get aid to the south, medical staff reported.

The territory's health ministry said a significant number of the {territ
