Cameron Norrie secured the most important win of his professional journey by rallying from a set down to beat top-ranked player Carlos Alcaraz 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the early stage of the prestigious indoor tournament.

While he had before overcome Alcaraz on two separate matches, this victory signifies Norrie's initial victory over a current world top-ranked player.

"Massive. So big for me," said Norrie, who is now the newest UK male player in the record books to beat a global number one. "Returning from a physical setback last year, I fell in the opening stage of qualifying rounds here. I just sought to enjoy my performance in the second half of the year. To secure a victory like this, it's the biggest success of my tennis journey, my maiden triumph over the top player and arguably the most in-form competitor in the world right now."

Norrie, ranked No 31, also ended Alcaraz's dominant sequence of nine finals in a row and 17 straight Masters 1000 wins, which marked the finest stretch of performances in the young champion's early career.

The top seed seemed to be moving confidently to success at the start as he sailed through the initial stanza. However, Norrie steadily battled back back into the game by delivering with improved accuracy and dragging the Spaniard into prolonged, grueling exchanges. His unceasing steadiness and dependability steadily left its mark.

For much of the battle, the world number one performed well on serve but he found it challenging to find his timing with his rally strokes.
