Slot Maintains He Is Secure and Has Liverpool's Support Following PSV Humiliation
The Liverpool head coach admitted that it was natural for questions to be asked about his future following another convincing defeat against the Dutch champions.
Liverpool suffered their 9th defeat in 12 games, representing the team's poorest run since being demoted in 1953-54.
They were outplayed by the Dutch league title holders on a tough evening at their home ground.
“I am feeling safe, I am OK, I have got significant backing from the top,” Slot commented.
“It would be nice to turn it around and secure a win naturally but when you're working as a coach and struggling then it's expected that doubts arise.”
He noted, “I accept my position. This isn't the initial instance I've found myself in a difficult position but it's necessary that we changed our fortunes.”
Talks with Club Management
When asked to provide details on his conversations with the club's leadership, Slot said:
“We communicate frequently. They are supportive to the team and to me and we have those conversations but they don’t call me all the time each day to say they trust me.”
He added, “During our regular exchanges I feel the confidence. But I haven’t spoken to them since this defeat so far so we'll see.”
Familiar Problems and Squad Response
The manager expressed regret over known failings from his team in their Champions League loss, namely poor finishing and defensive lapses.
Meanwhile, midfielder Curtis Jones was blunter in his assessment of the current crisis.
“I don’t have the answers. Frankly, I don’t. I'm telling that to all,” the midfielder stated.
“It's simply not good enough. I don’t even need to wait to reflect. I’m past getting mad inside. I've reached the stage currently where I simply lack the vocabulary.”
He went on, “It’s hard because I play for the team I support. I’m a fan, and I’ve seen Liverpool since I was young.”
“In a long, long time, I haven’t experienced a Reds side experiencing a phase like this with results this poor.”
Jones stated, “However we continue to wear that badge on our chest. And until it is gone, we’re always going to compete.”
“Our aim is to help the side back to its rightful place, prove once more what Liverpool stands for and why people call it the best team in the planet.”
“But right now, we’re in the shit and it must improve.”
