The Porcine Pardon: Hog Named 6-7 Spared by Miami Dade County Leader.
Although not quite at the same level as pardoning holiday birds, but the county's top official experienced a ceremonial pardon event this week by formally pardoning the life of a swine named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava performed the seasonal stunt at the Cuban-themed Latin Cafe 2000 in the heart of Miami’s Little Havana neighborhood.
“This animal is guiltless. Clemency is justified for her. Her criminal record is spotless,” stated the mayor in a speech with clear references to the vast quantity of executive clemencies issued since the beginning of a new presidential term.
“Except perhaps for eating six or seven apples per day,” Levine Cava continued. “I hope she experiences a prosperous future free from concern.”
This ceremony, simultaneously observing and challenging the region’s Hispanic tradition of consuming swine during the holidays, was founded to mirror the yearly bird sparing at the White House.
The animal, donated by a local firefighter, was given its name from the modern linguistic fad of young people exclaiming “6-7” – originating from a hip-hop line – often seemingly at random. The trend became so pervasive that a leading lexicon site recently made “6-7” its top term for the year.
A Peaceful Retirement
This particular pig is now destined to live out its days at a countryside refuge “distant from barbecues and spits”, according to the event’s official press release.
“The annual pig pardon has become a beloved tradition to begin the end-of-year celebrations,” said the cafe owner, in a notably cheerful message.
“It captures the spirit of Miami: happy, varied, and grounded in customs that unite the community. Each year, we are honored to observe heritage and mercy in a way only Miami can.”
Participants enjoyed a vegetarian menu of spinach croquetas and strong coffee as they celebrated the pig's pardon.
