Triple Most Valuable Player Nikola Jokic suffers a 'heartbreaking' injury to his knee.

He earned the NBA's Most Valuable Player title in three of the past four years.

Three-time National Basketball Association MVP Jokic suffered a "gut-wrenching" knee injury when the Nuggets lost by a score of 147-123 against the Heat.

The star player sustained the injury late in the first half in an unintentional contact with team-mate Jones.

Jones stepped on the foot of the MVP, who promptly went down to the ground holding his knee.

The 30-year-old, who is leading the NBA season in boards and assists, had 21 points and eight assists in the game prior to suffering the setback.

He will undergo an MRI scan on the following day to assess the extent of the issue.

"Immediately, he realized he was hurt," commented Denver head coach Adelman.

"This is part of the NBA. Anyone that suffers an injury, that's gut-wrenching, particularly somebody as special as Jokic. We'll find out more on Tuesday."

"The team will adjust together. Clearly, at this moment, I am more concerned just about him personally and the letdown of facing a situation of that nature."
