UN:Me: A Cerebral Horror Merging Silent Hill and Among Us Mechanics

The latest Day of the Devs digital showcase revealed several intriguing future games, but one especially has captured the imagination: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player experience seems to blend the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill title with the suspicion-driven core of Among Us.

"It's a unique game where a girl harboring several personalities inside her needs to flee from a maze of the mind," explains developer Yasukazu Kawai.

Stepping Into a Fractured Mind

In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed female protagonist seeming to be of high school age. Inside her reside four distinct souls, all possessing their own anxieties and drives. These souls can take over at will, releasing their deep-seated terrors upon her suddenly.

Judging by showcased gameplay, much of the narrative takes place within a creepy medical facility, though additional clips depict the main character exploring a abandoned chapel.

A World of Individual Horror

"What are you fearful of? What makes you uneasy?" asks creative lead Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Small rooms. People in power. Things that appear minor to others can trigger something primal within us. This game delves into that idea — anxieties that are specific to each person."

The central mechanic revolves around controlling the persona that emerges at any given moment. However, these souls will change involuntarily as you play. While exploring, each soul's fears become amplified and assault the girl in succession. As the persona shifts, so does the particular terror the player experiences.

Unsettling Visuals and a Fatal Decision

At first glance, UN:Me displays noticeable visual similarities with the Silent Hill franchise. The setting is populated by nurses who all share the identical visage, with unnervingly wide grins. Figures in the lobby have enormous flowers where their heads are. Floral motifs are an ever-present element, juxtaposing natural beauty with unnatural horror.

Yet, UN:Me presents a unique twist. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four souls inhabiting the protagonist is the "real" one. "All four personas asserts that the body belongs to them," explains a developer. "Throughout the game, you must determine who is real."

Once players have deduced a persona is fake, they are forced to destroy it. However, because each soul can deceive or obfuscate the truth, it is very easy to choose incorrectly.

"Perhaps you've already destroyed the real [soul] with your own hands," a voice states. "The last one standing could be a fraud. Either way, your decisions are irreversible."

UN:Me currently lacks a publicly announced launch window, but it is available to wishlist on platforms.
