Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was compelled to shut down for several hours when multiple of them entered the national airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The temporary shutdown led to 30 flight cancellations affecting six thousand travelers, with authorities cautioning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Border security stated that multiple atmospheric balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two balloons ending up right above the main terminal.
Up to 14 of the atmospheric instruments sent during the weekend drifted across the metropolitan zone, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and close to the frontier with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
At least 11 balloons containing 18,000 packs of black-market cigarettes have now been retrieved, though this number could rise, according to border security officials.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Balloons with contraband - cigarettes from Belarus - are common occurrences in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
To date in the current year, numerous meteorological balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were recorded last year.
Cross-Border Effects
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Polish territory, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has documented over 100 cases in which smuggled items were delivered from its border nation utilizing the balloons.
Criminal Methodology
Regarding inquiries concerning why smugglers utilize a method that is especially affected by weather factors rather than more controllable drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by contraband transporters - they are cheaper than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Officials added that "The goal of law enforcement is to seize the largest possible volumes of smuggled items and to apprehend coordinators and perpetrators so that this activity become economically unsustainable and create minimal risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have caused air traffic disruption across the continent.
Parallel situations in adjacent nations have caused EU officials to fast-track conversations about strengthening air defences throughout European airspace.
