The teenager has featured in seven games for Real Madrid, including five appearances in the starting lineup.

When an teenage creates Real Madrid a historic moment in a crucial European tie against Manchester City, it inevitably draws praise and attention.

During his first start in the tournament - and fifth game for the club - the young midfielder made a strong impression as the fifteen-time European champions claimed a 3-0 last-16 first-leg advantage at the Bernabeu.

The young player, who also had his Real debut in the qualifying round a few weeks prior with a cameo off the bench at Benfica, then helped the Madrid side overcome the English champions in Tuesday's second leg to confirm a last eight place.

At 18 years old, Pitarch became the club's youngest player to start twice in the Champions League knockout stages, beating Brazil forward Vinicius Jr's record by a week and a half.

Rapid Ascent Through The Academy

The midfielder is the most recent to come through from the club's academy and is quickly establishing himself as one of Alvaro Arbeloa's most promising protegees.

He joined Real from CD Leganes in 2023, having previously been with Atletico and Getafe's academies, and initially featuring for the under-19 side, where he rapidly created a strong impression.

He progressed to the B team and it was during a pre-season game in which they faced the academy's first team, then coached by Arbeloa, where the youngster is said to have drawn the eye of the current Real boss, who took over from Xabi Alonso in January.

Reports would later describe the moment as "love at first sight," noting he excelled not only for his technical ability, but for the energy, character and determination he added to the side.

'His Best Attribute Is His Personality'

During the summer of 2025, ex-manager Xabi Alonso called up Pitarch to train with the senior squad and gave him playing time during pre-season.

Yet, it was Arbeloa's appointment that proved the defining moment in his development as he came on as a late substitute in both ties against Benfica that set up the meeting with Pep Guardiola's team.

"I've dreamed of this every night before going to bed, the first day I started playing football, every day you head to training and each day you have a game," stated the player after his first appearance.

"I've just achieved my dream with the best team in the planet and in the best competition."

Handed a starting debut in the Spanish league against his former club - where he was for four years after moving from Atleti in 2018 - he has retained his place for the next four as fitness issues to Jude Bellingham and Dani Ceballos created an opportunity.

The teenager has taken it with displays that have defied his age and experience.

"He's a very quick player, and you can see what he's capable of," said the coach. "He is extremely dynamic, with great stamina, effort and movement."

Pitarch's mentality has also stood out to his manager.

"His greatest quality is his personality," added Arbeloa. "He always wants the possession, and when pressed, he doesn't feel it.

"I realize people are astonished to see him start in a Champions League match, but he's playing because I had total trust in him to perform what he usually does.

"Thiago will keep receiving chances with the first team. It's a pleasure to have a player like him."

Spain or Morocco?

Pitarch was born in a Madrid suburb, in the Madrid region, and was raised deeply involved in Spanish football, moving through local academies before joining the club's famous La Fabrica system.

He holds both Spanish and Moroccan citizenship, giving him the option to represent both nations at senior international level.

Under Fifa eligibility rules, players may represent multiple nations at junior level without being locked in, with the ultimate choice only binding once they appear in a competitive full international.

He has featured for the Spanish national team at underage levels, turning out for both the U19 and U20 teams, and participated in the 2025 Fifa Under-20 World Cup, where La Roja made it to the quarter-finals.

Despite this, he has yet to commit to any full national side, who are watching his rise with interest.

In a recent interview, Pitarch confirmed: "I haven't made my final decision so far. My situation is positive with the Spanish federation, but I will reach a decision soon."

His situation echoes that of other bi-national talents such as club colleague Diaz and Barcelona forward Yamal. Whereas 18-year-old Yamal chose La Roja, Brahim opted to play for Morocco.

Focus on the Future

For now, his attention is on establishing himself in the Madrid lineup and repaying his manager's belief.

He featured for over an hour in the two-one win at the Etihad, which sealed a 5-1 overall triumph and a last-eight tie with the German champions.

His substitution by another academy player in Angel to emphasise Arbeloa's trust in the next generation to help the club chase future success.

After his impressive impact to date on European football's biggest stage, the midfielder is tipped to play a key role in that.

"The manager handles me the identical way. We deal with it very naturally. I try not to think about it excessively - I have to deserve my playing time on the pitch," he commented after the win at Etihad Stadium.
