Wimbledon Adopts Video Challenge Technology in 2025.

Wimbledon court with replay technology

Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in utilizing replay technology.

Replay systems are set to arrive at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.

Competitors are granted the option to question certain decisions from the chair umpire, mirroring the protocol already in use at both the US Open and the Australian Open.

The new system will be accessible on the main stadium and Court One throughout the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This development arrives only a season following the AELTC implemented electronic line calling, which effectively ended the centuries-old role of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to review other decisions, including:

  • Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
  • Potential interference end of a rally.

Importantly, there will be no cap on the number of reviews a competitor can ask for.

Case in Point

A recent example took place in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against his opponent.

Draper admitted it was a tough call for the umpire, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and determined Draper was guilty of hindrance, granting the point to his opponent.

Growing Trend

This technology are not exclusive to Grand Slams. It was adopted at the American major for two years and the Aussie Open this year.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have video reviews implemented at all of its events.

Other Changes

A further change at The Championships 2025 involves the introduction of graphical cues on displays to support the audio calls from the ELC system.

This addresses instances where the crowd have occasionally been uncertain if a ball was out or in.

Finally, with exactly a century of days to go until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have also announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
